Breaking News: King of Style, Ben Ikimi, Bows Out in Grandeur
By: Al Humphrey Onyanabo

Lagos high society has been thrown into mourning following the passing of one of its brightest lights — Ben Ikimi, the younger brother of flamboyant politician and architect Chief Tom Ikimi. Known for his refined taste, effortless elegance, and appetite for the finer things of life, Ben lived as he pleased — lavishly, boldly, and unapologetically.

For those who knew him, Ben Ikimi was not just a man — he was a lifestyle. He carried himself with the ease of old money and the flair of new ambition. His presence at any gathering instantly elevated the atmosphere — his tailored suits, gold cufflinks, and the faint trail of exotic cologne that announced him before he spoke. He was one of those rare Lagos men who could blend charm, wit, and grace without ever seeming to try.

In the late 1990s, when Lagos nightlife was beginning to find its true rhythm, Ben Ikimi changed the game with his creation of the legendary Silver Door Night Club on Victoria Island. It wasn’t just a nightclub — it was an institution. The Silver Door was where Nigeria’s crème de la crème came to unwind; a place where deals were whispered over bottles of Dom Pérignon and laughter echoed into the early hours.

Membership was exclusive — ₦1 million in cash — a figure that spoke volumes at a time when the naira had real weight. Yet, the city’s elite scrambled to be part of it. Bank MDs, insurance czars, oil barons, and visiting expatriates jostled for entry, while beautiful women from across the country dreamt of catching a glimpse — or a favor — from the moneyed men who made The Silver Door their playground.

Champagne was the anthem, and Ben was the maestro.

Behind the velvet ropes and sparkling chandeliers of Silver Door was a man who understood beauty and craftsmanship. As a builder and interior decorator, Ben’s eye for detail was legendary. He designed spaces that exuded both comfort and class — his own residence on Bourdillon Road in Ikoyi stood as a showpiece of taste long before the high-rises took over that iconic stretch.

His circle of friends read like a who’s who of Nigeria’s business and social elite — Musa Dede, Greg Uanseru, Osaro Onaiwu, Osa Osunde, Tony Elumelu, and many others who admired not just his style but his loyalty and humor.

Even as Lagos evolved and the nightlife he once defined transformed, Ben Ikimi remained a symbol of an era when elegance still mattered and wealth had personality.

His death leaves a void — not just among his family and friends, but in the annals of Lagos’ social history. The King of Style has kicked the bucket, yes — but the legend of Ben Ikimi will linger in the champagne-scented memories of those privileged to have known him.

He came. He saw. He styled.
And now, he rests.

TRIBUTE TO DR. DOYIN OKUPE (1952-2025) https://chieftomikimi.com/tribute-to-dr-doyin-okupe-1952-2025/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 21:12:14 +0000 https://chieftomikimi.com/?p=2586 With a deep sense of loss and sadness, I, the National Chairman and members of the Working Committee of the erstwhile National Republican Convention (NRC) announce the passing of our dear friend, brother, and colleague, Chief Dr. Doyin Okupe. Born on March 22, 1952, Chief Okupe passed away in the early hours of Friday, March 7, 2025, after a brief illness. He leaves behind a loving wife and cherished children who will undoubtedly carry on his legacy.

Chief Okupe was not only a devoted Christian but also a passionate patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria. As a foundational member of the NRC, his unwavering commitment to democracy and good governance was evident in every endeavor he undertook. His loyalty, selflessness, and dedication to duty were hallmarks of his character, and his contributions to the party and the nation were invaluable.

Throughout his life, Chief Okupe exemplified integrity and compassion, inspiring those around him to strive for a better Nigeria. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him, as he touched countless lives with his kindness and wisdom.

Our paths first crossed during the vibrant political era of the National Republican Convention (NRC), where he served with exceptional dedication as our publicity secretary. His brilliance in strategic communication and unwavering loyalty set him apart as an invaluable asset to our political endeavors.

The NRC/SDP parties came to an end in June 1993 but our close relationship continued uninterrupted. He always put in maximum commitment and excellence to all endeavors in which he found himself. I was therefore not surprised at the captivating roles he played in the Obasanjo Government administration and recently in projecting HE Peter Obi to almost win the Presidency.

Dr. Okupe was not just a renowned physician; he was a distinguished Nigerian who dedicated his life to public service. From his role as presidential spokesperson to his various contributions to nation-building, he demonstrated an uncommon commitment to Nigeria’s development.

I recall with fondness our numerous private committee meetings where his intellectual depth and strategic insights proved invaluable. His contributions to various initiatives under my leadership were marked by wisdom, pragmatism, and an unwavering dedication to excellence.

As we bid farewell to this great son of Nigeria, we are consoled by the indelible marks he left on our political landscape and the lives he touched. His legacy as a medical practitioner, politician, and presidential aide will continue to inspire generations to come.

To his beloved family, we extend our heartfelt condolences. May the Almighty God grant you the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. And to our dear friend and great patriot Doyin, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

Signed

Your Grace,
Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Akubueze,
The Archbishop of Benin City Catholic Archdiocese and
The Edo Catholic Community

The news of the passing of Archbishop Emeritus, Patrick Ebosele Ekpu, has evoked in me the deepest reflections of life, as I recall with passion, my very recent visit to this eminent servant of God who dedicated his long life to serving the Almighty God and ministering to the people of Nigeria particularly in Edo State. We give gratitude to God for Archbishop Ekpu’s 92 years on earth which were testaments to his unwavering faith, boundless compassion, and lifelong commitment to the spiritual nourishment of his flock.

A beloved shepherd of souls, Archbishop Ekpu’s wisdom, gentleness, and humility were an inspiration to all who knew him. Through his powerful homilies and dedicated acts of selfless charity, he was a guiding light who showed us the path of righteousness, how to bear with faith all earthly challenges, and the way to live in peace and harmony with our fellow men and women. His was a ministry defined by love, service, and unshakeable belief in the dignity and equality of all God’s children.

In this time of mourning, may the outpouring of love and the cherished memories of Archbishop Ekpu’s life be of comfort to the Archdiocese of Benin City and the entire Catholic community in Nigeria. Though he has departed from this earthly world, his legacy of principled leadership and compassionate acts will forever illuminate our way forward. Archbishop Ekpu’s soul now rests in the eternal embrace of the Lord he served so faithfully.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this sorrowful moment. May the consoling grace of our Heavenly Father ease our grief and uphold all of us in the sure hope of our reunion in everlasting life.
