The Igueben people have confirmed their backing for the People’s Democratic Party, PDP Candidate for the 2025, Edo Central Senatorial District’s election, Prince Joe Okojie’s senatorial bid, joining a growing list of supporters who believe in his vision for Edo Central. This endorsement comes on the heels of a powerful statement from former Minister of Foreign Affairs, High Chief Tom Ikimi, a seasoned politician and who has thrown his weight behind Okojie’s candidacy.

Ikimi’s statement quashes rumors about his party affiliation, affirming his commitment to the PDP and Okojie’s candidacy. “I’m still in PDP… We are sending Prince Joe Okojie to the Senate. It’s Uromi’s turn,” he declared, highlighting the party’s zoning arrangement and Okojie’s alignment with this principle.

Ikimi’s endorsement is a significant boost to Okojie’s campaign, bringing goodwill and galvanizing support among PDP stalwarts and voters. The Igueben people’s backing and Ikimi’s support demonstrate growing momentum behind Okojie’s candidacy, driven by his message of equal representation and development.

With Ikimi’s backing, Okojie’s campaign is poised to gain even more traction. As the campaign heats up, Okojie’s team will build on this momentum, reaching out to voters and stakeholders to secure their support. Okojie is set to be a strong contender in the election, with a vision that resonates with the people of Edo Central.

    • It is indeed very appropriate to convene this meeting of our party at this time and I am very pleased with the attendance that I see here. The PDP actually kick started this fourth Republic and I am pleased that the very first governor of Edo State, HE Lucky Igbinedion of PDP is here with us today too. His tenure of 8 years was successful and unbroken. His deputy, Chief Mike Ogiadhome, is also here with us today. After serving as deputy governor for 8 years, Chief Mike Ogiadhome proceeded to serve as Chief of Staff of President Goodluck Jonathan. Their being here together, today and giving leadership to their party at the state level is highly commendable.
    • I see as well, here in this arena, former Distinguished Senators, former members of House of Representatives, former Members of House of Assembly etc identifying with our party. This is how it should be at all levels. A good and realistic political party is indeed a family, that is always bound together, in pursuit of the best agenda and the common good of its people in the entire nation which is the wider family, whether in good times or difficult times. I would dare say, that the PDP kick started this fourth republic in that manner and established a realistic political party that up till today has its presence in every nook and cranny of our nation. The party therefore grew to become the biggest political party in Africa. A political party is not a business venture or a location where well known crooks and corrupt speculators assemble to perform their destructive roles.
    • The continuous 16 years in National office of the PDP government, that commenced this 4th Republic, has remained so far unrivaled and indelible, and it is now true that most Nigerians yearn for those days to comeback. Sometimes power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I personally recall that there was a former PDP National chairman, a good man,, who out of nowhere declared that the PDP was destined to be in power for another 60 years. It was about then that some right thinking Nigerians gathered together to form an alternative

platform and so the APC was born in 2014 through the merger, for the first time, of some opposition political parties. Various attempts to form alliances or coalitions had hitherto failed. All the parties that merged to form the new party lost their original identity. This included ACN that had 7 Governors at the time with 6 from the South West and one from Edo State from the South South. The idea then was to have alternative platforms of two major political parties as exists in major democracies such as in the USA and the United Kingdom.

    • My assessment is that the APC was hijacked by some forces and converted into a structure that was not of the best interest of our Nation. We are all witnesses of their operations so far and indeed the disaster that we are going through. That party is now a collection of people possessing only personal interests. Take a look at the United States, when the Republicans do not serve the proper purpose, the Democrats take over and in the UK, that is the same situation between Labour and the Conservatives. Despite the grave difficulties that our country faces today under the APC, it seems that all we are now presented with are just the desperate efforts to destroy the PDP so that the country may become a one party dictatorship. It is very clear to me that the only way forward for our country now is the survival of the PDP. History will certainly be kind to all of you gathered here. With the successful and appropriate adjustments at the highest leadership level, which I see now ongoing, I believe all will be well with the PDP and our country in a non too distant future.
    • No organization, political party or country, can progress smoothly without obeying established rules and regulations. In the political party we have a Constitution which has been reviewed from time to time. That constitution contains the acceptable rules and regulations of operating the party at all levels. It also establishes in very clear terms the roles that all its members can play. In the heart of all this is also discipline. Without discipline the party cannot operate successfully.

In Edo State, the PDP lost the State in 2007/8. After that loss for about 13 years it had a rather failed leadership in the state that could not win any elections. Thank God some leaders stepped in, many of them are with us here today and delivered the State back to PDP in 2020. In 2024 as you all know, our distinguished candidate, Barr Asue Ighodalo with his running mate Barr Osarodion Ogie won the election hands down. We are still pursuing the retrieval of their genuine mandate. I am confident, that in the end, justice will prevail. There are a handful of persons who proclaim to be members of our party but in reality they are agents of some other people with incredible personal ambitions. These persons have fought to tear down our party during the past four years or so. It is now crystal clear that some of them who claimed to lead the party in Edo State from 2007 to 2019 or so spent that whole time working seriously against the party.

    • Edo State is a key State in the South South Region. The South South region has been a key PDP region with all the 6 States in PDP for a long time. Unfortunately, once again, we have some persons with personal ambition who are committed to destroying the PDP unity and strength in the South South region for a mess of portage. It was indeed a very welcome development when very recently the Supreme Court ruled that the leadership structure and and management of political parties remains the internal affairs of each party. The National Working Committee of our party has quite appropriately established caretaker committees to operate the running of our party in states where such structures are necessary which incidentally includes Edo State. Recently, there was an illegal conference held in a hotel in calabar where the group involved claimed they were electing a new PDP South South Exco. To cut a long story short the NWC had since dissociated itself from the charade. The NWC has  since then, established a caretaker committee for the South South led by Hon Emma Ogidi. The recent activities of members of that illegal group are indeed very highly offensive.
    • This stakeholders meeting is very important indeed. It conveys a very clear message to the country that the PDP in Edo State is strong and vibrant. It is very clear that all those who are now fully in the opposing party but pretending to still be in PDP are performing criminal acts far more dangerous than anti party. It is in their best interest to immediately declare their exit from the PDP.
    • We have in this arena, I believe, all our elected local government chairmen who unfortunately have been illegally barred from performing their duties for which they were elected. The Judiciary has appropriately declared the actions illegal but it seems we are now in a lawless environment where court judgements are recklessly ignored. Recently I saw a collection of some individuals picked from here and there being presented to the present governor for accreditation as the Local Government Chairmen. That is very unfortunate indeed. We will continue with our genuine struggle for the respect of the law.

The APC attack on the South South Region has been intense recently. I have seen in the press, reports of the defection of our Delta State Governor to APC and this also included the defection of his predecessor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa to the APC as well. I am aware of the route we took in the PDP to give Gov Sherrif Oborevwori the ticket of our party as well as to give his predecessor the Vice Presidential ticket. All that I can say now is that it is indeed very early to express too much regrets. It is not out of place to say that the people of Delta have not yet spoken recalling that in 2023 PDP lost Delta massively;’;’ to Senator Peter Obi of Labour Party, a candidate with no governor at that time.

Edo PDP chieftains shrug off Caretaker C’ttee sack…say party future remains bright https://chieftomikimi.com/edo-pdp-chieftains-shrug-off-caretaker-cttee-sacksay-party-future-remains-bright/ Sun, 11 May 2025 16:27:21 +0000 https://chieftomikimi.com/?p=2593

Chieftains of Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State have shrugged off the recent dissolution of Edo and Bayelsa States PDP Caretaker Committees by the party’s national secretariat.

This was the position of the party Chieftains at Edo State PDP stakeholders meeting held in Benin City where they pushed back against narratives of a crumbling opposition party ahead of 2027 general elections.

Addressing stakeholders on Thursday, the factional chairman of the party, Tony Aziegbemi hailed the outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment towards retrieving Asue Ighodalo, PDP Candidate in Saturday September 21st Edo State governorship election mandate in court.

Aziegbemi acknowledged the support of some leaders of the party, including Mike Oghiadomhe, former State deputy Governor and former Governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion
who was the chairman on the occasion.

The PDP factional chairman said the contribution and devotion of these leaders have remained an inspiration to young Nigerians while urging them to remain focus and continue to promote united fronts.

He also frowned at the leadership style of the All Progressives Congress-led government of President Bola Tinubu for deploying threats, blackmail, coercion and State apparatus to coerce PDP leaders to defect into APC for the attainment of their own political ambition.

“We accept that we have issues. This crisis will bring out the best in us.
The point is what do we want? We want our mandate back. That is what we are praying about”, he said.

“So, don’t worry about those leaving us. Those we gave tickets to. We campaigned for them and won the election. They got alerts every month. Now, they have left our party.

“We have not contents and integrity than them. We in PDP are very united and strong.
“I think it is a very wrong strategy – a very weak strategy for the APC to have as it’s strategy. Should that be a problem for us? The future is so bright”, according to Aziegbemi.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and founding member of PDP, Chief Tom Ikimi gave a border historical accounts of the existential threats that led to the dwindling fortune of PDP.

He recommended appropriate adjustments for PDP leadership in order to bounce back to power ahead of the next general elections.

The Inauguration of Disciplinary Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). https://chieftomikimi.com/the-inauguration-of-disciplinary-committee-of-the-peoples-democratic-party-pdp/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 07:59:06 +0000 https://chieftomikimi.com/?p=2562

Discipline is indeed a fundamental requirement for the smooth and efficient management of any organization and most certainly for a political party. Chapter 10 of the PDP constitution prescribes the details of implementing this requirement in our party. For some time now, there has been a proliferation of actions across various levels of our party, throughout the country, which have been actions of gross indiscipline. These actions have contributed in no small measure to the misfortune of our party at various levels. The media is full, of unfavorable comments, all about gross indiscipline perpetrated by virtually all categories of our membership. Everyone knows that our fundamental problem in the 2023 General Election was absolute indiscipline.

I recall that after the shocking and inexcusable defeat of the PDP in the 2015 General Elections, in consideration of how best to rebrand itself to be in proper quest for power in the future, it was obvious to all, that Party discipline was to be restored to all levels of the party without exception. I believe that was why in August 2017 a National Disciplinary Committee of seven members was inaugurated. That number was by the provisions of our constitution and the seven members chosen were of the highest caliber. I have had the privilege of being the Chairman of the committee since then. The other members are:

    Chief Onyeama Ugochukwu CON
    Rt Hon. Austin Opara
    Late Barr Victor Kwon
    Col Balance Mande (RTD)
    Hadjia Inna Ciroma
Barr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN (member secretary)

May I use this opportunity to express my profound thanks to all these members of the committee, for their wonderful cooperation and dedication to all our tasks. The disciplinary committee can only operate as directed by the NWC. All matters that were referred to the committee since its inauguration were promptly attended to. I was aware of so many matters, freely discussed in the public domain but they were never referred to the committee.

Today, our country is in dire straights. We just experienced a nationwide Protest which tells the story of where we are. Those of us who in 2014 played vital roles in the creation of an alternative powerful party succeeded in creating the APC which gave the PDP necessary competition. It is now clear to all that a change is now necessary. The PDP must put its act together and claim back power again as the true and reliable alternative. There is no need really for the creation of any new political parties. The establishment of these two committees, the Reconciliation Committee and the Disciplinary Committee is fundamental for the proper restructuring of our party. This must not be just a show, at the end of which we all walk away and go to sleep.

With regards to the Disciplinary Committee, if indeed we are within the accurate implementation of the constitution with regards to the number of members, I assess that we have put together, quite a distinguished selection across the country for its membership. I hope that all those selected and inaugurated today have come fully committed with loyalty to the party to face the task before us squarely. Certainly, this is not the platform to represent any individual or factional interest. There is no question that if there are members of the committee with any matters against them, they will without doubt also face the committee.

Mr Chairman, We need a detailed terms of reference and a well-established work procedure. I hope the necessary support will be worked out to enable this rather large committee to perform successfully.

Let me express my thanks on behalf of all the members of the Disciplinary Committee to our National Chairman and all the members of the NWC for finding us worthy to be members of this very important committee. We look forward to a very harmonious working relationship all in the best interest of our Party and our country.

PDP EXTRAORDINARY MEETING ON THE STATE OF THE PARTY IN EDO CENTRAL SENATORIAL DISTRICT Held on the 13th of August 2023 at Igueben. https://chieftomikimi.com/pdp-extraordinary-meeting-on-the-state-of-the-party-in-edo-central-senatorial-district-held-on-the-13th-of-august-2023-at-igueben/ Sun, 13 Aug 2023 18:24:17 +0000 https://chieftomikimi.com/?p=2465

We, elders and critical leaders of PDP in Edo State, having become aware of some political disagreements within the membership of our great party in Edo State, consider it urgent that all groups sheath their swords and respect Party leadership intervention at the highest level. We have been disturbed by the recent open confrontations between H.E. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and our Governor, H.E. Godwin Obaseki of Edo State. It is absolutely necessary for us to bring all this to an end immediately and ensure the smooth operation of a united South-Southern block of PDP states.

We recall that sometime in 2020, we the elders and critical leaders of Edo State met in Abuja and Benin City and proposed a plan of uniting the vast majority of Edo people into one party – the PDP to ensure our party wins the governorship election and takes over power in Edo State; power which had eluded our party for over twelve years before then. We therefore approached the National Chairman and National Working Committee of our party with our plans. Central to our plan was our invitation to Governor Godwin Obaseki, then of APC, to contest the 2020 Governorship election under PDP. We considered this a realistic approach as we did not want to run the risk of another four years in the opposition in Edo State. The Party leadership found our proposal very workable.

At the point of our approach to Governor Godwin Obaseki, which coincided with the Edo State APC crisis at the time, time was really running out. We were however aware that there were other interested PDP aspirants in Edo State and unfortunately one of them approached the court and obtained a restraining order to frustrate our efforts. This was most unfortunate but we must most sincerely thank the Governors of our Party, led by HE Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, the Chairman of PDP Governors Forum and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, the Chairman of the South-South PDP Governors forum who led their colleagues to Rivers State undertaking risky road night journeys and they secured a settlement that made it possible for the court case to be withdrawn and for all the other aspirants to step down.

At the Extraordinary meeting of leaders of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo Central Senatorial District held today, the 13th of August 2023 at Igueben, the topical issues affecting the Party in the State were reviewed in depth.

The meeting noted with satisfaction, the speedy and effective progress being made on the peace and reconciliation efforts to unite the contending forces within the Party, particularly in Esanland.

However, the deteriorating relationship between our Governor, His Excellency Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy Rt Hon Philip Shaibu, was noted with utmost dismay.

It is the collective view of the entire leadership of PDP in Edo Central that the controversy was unnecessary and avoidable, considering that the central issue of contention is to do with issue of Governorship succession at the end of the current tenure.

The reason for this is our strong belief that the strongest consideration for making the choice is Equity in addition to other factors related to competence and individual acceptability. From our interactions with our brothers from Edo South and Edo North, there is already a consensus that the next Governor will emanate from Edo Central Senatorial District principally because it is on record that Edo Central has not legally produced a Governor for our dear State since the inception of this democratic dispensation in 1999.

Besides, we believe that the process of making such a choice can be achieved by the leadership of the Party in a cordial and reasonable atmosphere rather than resort to intimidation and blackmail. Moreover, we condemn in very strong terms, the act of resorting to Court without exhausting the options provided in our Party Constitution for dispute settlement. In any case, the Governor has confirmed that he made no move to impeach his Deputy and we believe him.

We therefore urge the Deputy Governor to withdraw his suit forthwith and seek a political solution to the problem with his Principal. We are confident that the leadership of the Party in the State have the capacity to resolve whatever may be the issues between our leaders in Government.

Finally, his Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki has expressed his firm resolve and determination to finish well and strong; we hereby identify with him in that resolution because we believe that nothing short of that will augur well for us, the Party and our dear State. We therefore urge all men and women of goodwill to join hands with his Excellency to ensure success to make Edo great again.

At the end of the Extraordinary meeting of leaders of PDP in Edo Central Senatorial District, a Vote of implicit Confidence in the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki was moved by Chief Francis Ulinfun and seconded by Elder Johnny Abhulimen. The motion was unanimously passed by all the leaders in attendance on behalf of the Party in Esanland.

It is true that HE Governor Nyesom Wike embraced our candidate Governor Godwin Obaseki and in his well-known manner, became a leading force in our joint commitment to ensure unlimited efforts to our achieving our mission to win Government House, Benin City. Indeed, he came to Benin a few days before the election and took in his stride the humiliation of being blocked in his hotel by the APC security people.

However, that notwithstanding, the force of his presence in Edo State reverberated across the whole State.

In the end, we won the election landslide. It was indeed a commendable act by HE Governor Godwin Obaseki to make it a point of duty to visit his brother Governors in Sokoto, Rivers, Akwa Thom, Bayelsa, Delta, Bauchi, etc., immediately after his victory to express his appreciation to his brothers and colleagues.

The movement of Governors, Senators and other elected members from one party to the other is not new and, in the PDP, the process always included the harmonisation of structures. It is unfortunate that because of the very tight time frame this was not done before the elections. It has become an issue of serious interest today because we won the election which has created diverse opportunities. It should be noted that this was an election won virtually landslide. It made true our calculations for bringing in

Governor Godwin Obaseki who arrived with a great and powerful following including most of the APC State Executive, all the members of the State House of Assembly – PDP had none, all the elected Local Government Chairmen – PDP had none, and so many others. The need to harmonise and integrate was inevitable. There is no PDP Governor who is not in control of the party structure of his State and Edo State should not be different.

We have not been privy to the details of the negotiations that took place in Port Harcourt but one of the outcomes was the stepping down of the South-South Party National Vice-Chairman, Hon. Emma Ogidi of Delta State and the position given for immediate occupation to Chief Dan Orbih who had just finished an unbroken over twelve years tenure as PDP State Chairman of Edo State. The comments made by Governor Godwin Obaseki regarding his relationship with the new South-South Vice Chairman gives cause for concern.

In a very short time, HE Godwin Obaseki has been able to actualise an electronic registration of PDP Party membership in Edo State that today is in excess of 540,000 members. If this membership, which is still growing and should be encouraged is carefully managed, the landslide winning of elections by PDP in Edo State would be permanently guaranteed. Our commitment must be to continue to expand the frontiers of our party, increase its membership and ensure that all new members are integrated.

Many of us attended the ceremonies welcoming our new National Chairman, Senator lyorchia Ayu to Edo State last Thursday, 10th March, 2022 and particularly at the rally were the Deputy Governor of Edo State Rt Hon Philip Shaibu was one of the many speakers. He spoke openly and not in private. His mode of speaking was, as acknowledged by the National Chairman, in line with the attitude of our bustling energetic Youth population.

Governor assured him all would be well. We all rode together in the same bus to other events of the day. It is important to clarify here that we have always considered the Governor and Deputy Governor as a single ticket and it is our pleasure that there is no crack between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.

Once again, we appeal to all concerned to sheath their swords and to allow for the peaceful resolution of all matters by the highest authority of our party as was recently promised by our National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu. We are assured that there will be fairness, equity and justice which should guarantee a complete bonding of all our members in Edo State as we prepare to select our candidates for the upcoming general elections.
